Change in Training Policy
Effective April 1, 2012 the Spotter Network will be implementing a mandatory
training and testing
requirement<http://spotternetwork.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=3a4c535548ddf3f1867cc8373&id=ff716ed6cf&e=d574be5857>for
participation. Historically, the training requirement was only
required for those members who wished to submit storm reports through the
SN system. All members were allowed to beacon their position on SN maps
with or without meeting the training requirement. This, however, will no
longer be permitted. Both the Board of Directors and the Advisory
Committee<http://spotternetwork.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=3a4c535548ddf3f1867cc8373&id=d801dd27b4&e=d574be5857>
have
unanimously agreed to this change and requested that the implementation be
expedited for the 2012 severe weather season.
For those members who have already taken the training and testing, you
will not need to take any further actions.
Changes in Terms of Use
The SN has recently updated its Terms of
Use<http://spotternetwork.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=3a4c535548ddf3f1867cc8373&id=ac7ad4ffbe&e=d574be5857>and
wanted to make you aware of the changes as they relate to you. The SN
believes these changes are in alignment with what our members would want
and are directly due to the privacy concerns some members have expressed in
the past.
1. No individual, company or organization may retain position
information for more than 48 hours past the event without explicit approval
of the SN.
2. No individual, company or organization may distribute a derivative
work based on the position information after the 48 hours have expired
without explicit approval of the SN.
Remember ACES
The Board of Directors and Advisory Committee want to urge all SN members
to operate with safety as your number one priority when spotting or chasing
in 2012. The SN training and safety groups within the Advisory Committee
have developed the ACES Storm Spotter and Chaser program to make it easy to
remember some basic safety rules this season. This program is being rolled
out by both SN and SKYWARN™ nationwide in 2012. *ACES*
1. *A*wareness - Maintain situational awareness at all times
2. *C*ommunication - Have multiple methods of communication and make
sure someone else knows where you are
3. *E*scape Routes - Have planned escape routes in case the situation
deteriorates or deviates from what you expected
4. *S*afe Zones - Identify safety zones so you don't become a victim.
Don't become a part of the problem.
Please support our sponsors... Lastly, the Board of Directors would like
to extend a full hearted "Thank you!" to our corporate sponsors including
our premier partners
WeatherTAP<http://spotternetwork.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=3a4c535548ddf3f1867cc8373&id=775f8b63fb&e=d574be5857>

their continuing financial contributions. ithout their generosity,
much of what we do would not be possible. As you may or may not know, SN
is a not-for-profit and run soley through the time and effort of our
volunteers. If you or a company you know would like to support the 23,000
strong and growing SN membership, please encourage them to
donate<http://spotternetwork.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=3a4c535548ddf3f1867cc8373&id=264791e943&e=d574be5857>
or
become a partner. SN members provide an invaluable service to communities
large and small during severe weather through position and storm reporting.
