This is the BDR Newsletter 752, Volume 15, #24 for January 10, 2024

Here are some things you might want to know about:

CHAPTER 11
Audacy filed for Chapter 11 reorganization on Sunday. The stock is around 10 cents a share, even after the 30:1 reverse split, but soon will be worth "0" although common stockholders will get a tax loss for this year when the shares are cancelled. The combined former Entercom and CBS Radio were overcome by debt. At least most jobs were safe - no huge year-end layoffs were reported.

THE $4.5 MILLION FINES
Accounting for inflation, the FCC's maximum fine for obscene, indecent, or profane broadcasts is now up to $495,500 for each violation - or per day for continuing violations. The new maximum is $4,573,840. Plus legal fees.

Pirate fines also went up: unlicensed operation can be fined $61,238 a day, up to a maximum of $612,238. For most other rules, the daily fine is $61,238, but tops out at only $612,238. Plus legal fees.

OPEN HOUSE
Broadcast Depot is holding an Open House tomorrow at its Miami Offices. FCC OPEN MEETING
The January meeting (on 1/25) current has the DIRS (Disaster Information Reporting System) on the agenda. The FCC is said to be working toward making participation (reporting disaster outages and other operational issues) to be mandatory. While that may not be settled this month, and NPRM is expected to be set out on the matter.

STATION TOTALS ERODE A BIT
The number of licensed broadcast stations eroded sllghtly in the fourth quarter - just a handful of changes, barely ending up with different numbers. Will the erosion continue in 2024? We will see!

AMATEUR RADIO ROOTS

MANUFACTURERS' NEWS

This is CES week, the Adult Toy Store in some ways. This year, the Show is dominated by an AI theme. You can hardly see any exhibits that do not involve AI - from self-drive autos to virtual reality and from health monitoring to home devices. It is literally the story of the year, which is welcomed by some but still scares some others.

Among the more interesting items for broadcasters, UK ROXi's FastStream Technology and NextGen TV offer a new experience with  app-style interactivity to linear Broadcast TV, citing a study showing 77% of US households wanting free interactive music TV channels, karaoke and music games.

Initially, three new interactive music TV channels are set to launch across USA - the ROXi Music Channel, the ROXi Music Video Karaoke Channel, and the ROXi Music Games Channel, which will allow Broadcast TV viewers on connected TVs to pause, play and skip music videos for first time without downloading an app on the TV .

NextGen also released information on four new ATSC3 converters to hit the market. The first, the ADTH receiver is already at Walmart.

EAS participants continue to wait for the update to the firmware in the Sage unit. Delivery issues are also an issue for DASDEC users. The FCC has waived the December 12, 2023  deadline for Sage users until March 2024; DASDEC users who asked the FCC got individual waviers as well.
