Greetings from your broadcast friends out on the Desert...
This is the BDR Newsletter 752, Volume 15, #24 for January 10, 2024
Here are some things you might want to know about:
CHAPTER 11
Audacy filed for Chapter 11 reorganization on Sunday. The stock is around 10 cents a share, even after the 30:1 reverse split, but soon will be worth "0" although common stockholders will get a tax loss for this year when the shares are cancelled. The combined
former Entercom and CBS Radio were overcome by debt. At least most jobs were safe - no huge year-end layoffs were reported.
THE $4.5 MILLION FINES
Accounting for inflation, the FCC's maximum fine for obscene, indecent, or profane broadcasts is now up to $495,500 for each violation - or per day for continuing violations. The new maximum is $4,573,840. Plus legal fees.
Pirate fines also went up: unlicensed operation can be fined $61,238 a day, up to a maximum of $612,238. For most other rules, the daily fine is $61,238, but tops out at only $612,238. Plus legal fees.
OPEN HOUSE
Broadcast Depot is holding an Open House tomorrow at its Miami Offices. Everyone is welcome, but if you cannot make it down there, check in with us at 2 PM (Eastern) Tomorrow (Thursday) for some video from the event. The Virtual Lunch Gathering will be
on zoom and youtube live. The link information is available at
www.theBDR.net/TLG/ We encourage you to subscribe our theBDRnet channel on youtube. Not only will it let you know when the videos start, but we will get closer to the 1000 subscriber goal. Thanks!
FCC OPEN MEETING
The January meeting (on 1/25) current has the DIRS (Disaster Information Reporting System) on the agenda. The FCC is said to be working toward making participation (reporting disaster outages and other operational issues) to be mandatory. While that may
not be settled this month, and NPRM is expected to be set out on the matter.
STATION TOTALS ERODE A BIT
The number of licensed broadcast stations eroded sllghtly in the fourth quarter - just a handful of changes, barely ending up with different numbers. Will the erosion continue in 2024? We will see!
AMATEUR RADIO ROOTS
Amateur operations go back to the very beginnings of radio broadcasting. Some interesting material on the early equipment and the pioneers who made them is on Reid Brandon's site.
Take a look here. And also
here. A
third one is here.
SBE AT 60
The SBE first met at an NAB Event in 1964. This marks its 60th year.
FOR SALE
Someone has a CCA FM10000GX for sale, and someone else is seeking either a Revox A77 or B77.
And now that the big holidays are over,
Dana's Deals is back in motion.

MANUFACTURERS' NEWS
This is CES week, the Adult Toy Store in some ways. This year, the Show is dominated by an AI theme. You can hardly see any exhibits that do not involve AI - from self-drive autos to virtual reality and from health monitoring to home devices. It is literally
the story of the year, which is welcomed by some but still scares some others.
Has AI audio gone too far? Take a
look at this site.

Among the more interesting items for broadcasters, UK ROXi's FastStream Technology and NextGen TV offer a new experience with app-style interactivity to linear Broadcast TV, citing a study showing 77% of US households wanting free interactive music TV
channels, karaoke and music games.
Initially, three new interactive music TV channels are set to launch across USA – the ROXi Music Channel, the ROXi Music Video Karaoke Channel, and the ROXi Music Games Channel, which will allow Broadcast TV viewers on connected TVs to pause, play and skip
music videos for first time without downloading an app on the TV .

NextGen also released information on four new ATSC3 converters to hit the market. The first, the ADTH receiver is already at Walmart.

EAS participants continue to wait for the update to the firmware in the Sage unit. Delivery issues are also an issue for DASDEC users. The FCC has waived the December 12, 2023 deadline for Sage users until March 2024; DASDEC users who asked the FCC got
individual waviers as well.

Do You Remember? This week in history:
Broadcast related items:
... and 114 years ago (1/13/1910) the wireless transmission of a live Metropolitan Opera - an experiment and publicity stunt conducted by inventor Lee de Forest - is considered by some to be the first "Public Radio Broadcast."
Now for some more regular newsy stuff:
... and 215 years ago (1/7/1789) First US presidential election held. Who Won?

* But it ended up dropping the suit and making the song their unofficial jingle.
** One year later it was renamed Motown Records.
MIDWEEK BONUS
The news was full of information about the Boeing 737 door that popped out during flight. There was another item that fell 16,000- feet - and survived. Yep. A cell phone.
Take a look.

PLEASE INVITE A FRIEND
We sure hope you are finding the BDR and the Newsletter to be of value to you. If so, there are two things that you can do to ensure the BDR keeps pulsing along:
1. Invite a colleague or a friend to sign up for the Newsletter. Since it is only one-time-a-week, you will not be accused of flooding their in-boxes!
2. Anytime you deal with one of our sponsors, letting them know the BDR is important to you will make them happy - and ready to keep on supporting the BDR.
TELL US WHAT'S WHAT
There are so many areas into which we would like to expand, but it is feedback from you that helps us decided where to go first. Are you interested in a certain piece of gear or technology? Let us know. Even better, would you be willing to do a user report
and share your experience?

We sure do appreciate you spending time with our Newsletter. And even more so when you recommend us to your colleagues and friends.

Now ... some extra stuff .. some important ... some just interesting.
MORE DETAIL HERE
Those you who read the Newsletter might notice that more detail is
provided on some timely issues than on the BDR site, itself. That is one
reason we encourage you to invite your friends to subscribe. We are Opt-In
only... and we give you two promises (OK, four!):
(1) no inbox flooding - it is one-time-a-week, and
(2) we do not give out anyone's address.. ever.
(3) no cookies are placed on your computer.
(4) no Google ads are grafted onto your computer screen.
(Need to change your address? No problem. Or, what can we do to make the BDR more useful to you? Just reply and send us a note about what you like, or what you think is missing.)
