> I have fond memories of the SJRA Hamfest/Picnic beginning in 1959 which is the year I joined SJRA. I may have attended a few years before that because it was the one thing you didn't want to miss! I remember 55gal drums of boiling water with corn cooking in them. I remember two young kids shucking clams and guys eating them up as fast as they could shuck them! The food was endless, especially the dessert table. The highlight of the picnic for me was the fox hunt.
> For those not familiar, it was a hidden 2 meter transmitter that you had to find and who ever had the shortest time finding it won. They released the hunters every 10 minutes or so.
> I recall Brownie (W2PAU) with his arm out the driver's side window with his 2 meter Quad.
> One year there was a guy from DVRA who had a hole in his car roof and an antenna mounted on a pole that he could rotate from inside the car to get a good fix on the fox! This guy was either crazy or he took this fox hunting sport very seriously. Another memory was when Brownie hid the fox just down the road from the park at Malaga Lake and loaded the metal railing on a small bridge where the water passed under the road. Everyone watched and rolled on the ground laughing as the fox hunters drove back and forth past the hidden transmitter not realizing the RF was coming out of the railing!
> The ham fest was great and I remember buying a 2 meter AM transceiver built in a metal box with a handle to carrying it. It had three dry batteries in it that lasted an hour at best and a telephone handset attached. I carried that thing through the woods behind my house on many occasions talking to W2WL on his Heathkit Twoer not more that two miles away. Boy, how things have changed! Now you buy a three band hand held from China for $39.00 and walk in the same woods talking to someone 60 miles away through a repeater!
> Oh well, we had more fun!! Fond memories anyway.
