Some observations from the northern fringe of South Jersey....
IARU is a good contest to start. It's only 24 hours and since you can operate both CW & SSB, you can satisfy the preferences of club members. There's enough activity, especially HQ stations, to keep things interesting.
I've operated semi-seriously single op for a number of years. Summer conditions can make 10M & even 15M slow bands. Fortunately, you can turn the beam south and west and work stateside (at least on 15M). Daytime absorption can make 20M slow from mid morning to late afternoon. Again, stateside stations can keep the rates interesting. 40M is a pretty important band -- it's the best band after sunset. T-storm QRN makes 80M pretty iffy. You can work the many European HQ stations and some of the loud non-HQ stations, but copying the weaker guys is always tough for me.

A proposal to do the IARU contest in July as a serious effort to put ourselves out there as a true powerhouse. We are already known for the 160m contests. Time to stake our claim since we have several interested ops. Also this may peak some more interest in contesting as a group. I do apologize for my absence last night. It was the last game of the season for the youth roller hockey league I coach in.
So let me know what you think about the contest Idea. And we can make it happen.

I agree.
I have worked many a contest and many Field Days. Would love to work a contest with the group. Let's find a shorter one to work since the summer weekends are filled with family and beach!

Agreed.
We restarted SJDAX in West Creek with the notion contesting and met with overwhelming success with the 160M SSB contests as a group of rookies.
While not all in our group are contest orientated, we certainly have a core of seasoned and otherwise capable SSB operators. And I for one don’t have the equipment and antennas at my home station that approaches SJDXA station capably in West Creek. For those members wishing to sharpen their skills the OBARC Field Day is an excellent opportunity to gain experience. Some OBARC members take a competitive approach to FD. OBARC often scores in the top ten in its class.
I suggest we participate in an upcoming contest. Rather than a full 48-hour contest, may I suggest a more limited participation as the warm weather months are filled with other activities.
The QSL projects have put SJDXA on the map. But we should utilize and take advantage of the West Creek facilities and put SJDXA on the contest airwaves.
