In QST DEC 2013 Page 30 compares various Digital Modes to Voice and CW.

+2.5 to up-to +12 Times more Distance can be covered with Digital Modes.

 

With the state of the HF Bands after a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from the SUN,

a Digital Mode for Continuity of Radio Communications (CRC) should be something to consider.
