SJDXA crew,
We will be meeting at 9AM Friday for set up. All hands on deck.
Need to "adjust" the West sloper and the inverted L.
We found the WEST sloper actually resonant at around 1760 with a double dip
around 1825. Fold back starts around 1860 and SWR gets higher as we move up
in frequency. The NE sloper is resonant at 1790 with a double dip at around
1936. A slight foldback in between. This will work OK. On OMNI we see a
similar double dip. I am fairly sure that the WEST sloper was not really
properly trimmed by the CW team based on my measurements tonight. The 1760
dip is flat 1:1 while the 1825 dip is about 1.3:1 being the same general
pattern (shifted down in freq) as the NE sloper. Since we really can't
manage trimming the top part of the either sloper, we will just have to try
to tweak what we can by shortening the bottom part (folding the wire back).
(NOTE to CW TEAM)
The inverted L is resonant at 1825. No other dips. We need to move this up
to around 1860 to put us somewhere in the middle of our operational freq
range.
Weather will not be great on Friday. So, the field team will need to bring
their foul weather gear. It shouldn't be too difficult since the lower
sloper wires are readily accessible near the base of the big tower. And, the
inverted L "should" drop down easily for adjustment.
The beverages ALL SOUND GREAT! Tonight we easily worked two Russians using
200 watts. Both on one call. Both were strong on the NE beverage and neither
was readable on the other beverages. Moderately readable on the remote
vertical. Quick checks on other stations on the air tonight seem to prove
that all is well on RX. Including the vertical. No line noise. Atmospheric
noise was high but eliminated by using the DSP in the MKV.
Our planned layout is:
RUN: K3 AND ALPHA AMP (N2OO)
MULT: K3 AND DRAKE L7 (KB2M)
SLAVE: FT1000MKV WITH FULL COMPLEMENT OF ROOFING FILTERS (N2OZ)
Backups: FT1000MKV (N2CW) and AL811H (N2CW).
It would be really nice to have another K3 for the slave position (some day!
HIHI)
It would also be really nice to have a full power amplifier on the mult
station. However, we have a buckbooster that we will be trying out. If it
works, it could bring up our operating voltage on the L7 giving us more
power than before. We have 208 Volts at the shack. Our L7 is wired for 240
volts (only available tap). The booster SHOULD give us 240 volts. The only
question is if it can handle the current. Our crack electricians are working
on it for Friday.
NEEDED: If anyone else has a buck booster available? Please advise ASAP!
KE2OI is working on patch cords to hook in our new RF limiters into our
system, as well as the K3 BNC wires and the "bridging" of the three radios
onto the remote vertical.
We will also be including the remote vertical onto the slave radio through
an A/B switch so that op can choose either the vertical or a beverage to
listen to. (Slave only has a single receiver FT1000MKV)
If anyone else has ANY ideas, let us know!
Be sure to bring overnight sleeping gear (sleeping bag, pillow, cot, etc)
and also dress confortable! Sitting at the radio for long periods can be
VERY uncomfortable!
FOOD! If anyone wants to bring some sort of food, do it!!!! THANKS!
See you all this weekend!
The gate opens up at 9:00 and the coffee will be brewing thanks to the
donation of a brand new coffee pot from John KE2OI!! It has
auto-shutoff!!!!! Nice!
See ya' in the Pileups!
73!
