We are also apparently sitting on top of (at least I am) of three of the
largest and untapped deposits of deep natural gas in the world. There is
one under Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Ilinois, Wisconsin, and I believe
Ontario, Another under Pennsylvania and sourounding states, while a
third is pretty much centralized under the Midwest farm land. These are
deep and I understand would require "fracking" to break up the shale,
but being very deep there should be no problem from the process.
Reportedly these fields contain enough gas to power the continental US
for generations.
Even less deep deposits run some pretty high pressure. About 60 miles
to the SW of me is a field that reportedly had one of, if not the
highest well head pressure for a land based well at IIRC on the order of
6000#PSI or greater. High pressure tanks for O2, N2, and NE2 run around
2200PSI. BTW they blew out one of those well heads and you could see
the fire from 30 miles away and this is flat land country. The
so-called flat prairie is mountainous compared to lower Michigan.
Gas processing plants are spread around the country, but if I have my
information straight are connected together via a pipeline system that
is analogous to the electrical power grid. IOW a couple years back,
California was drawing natural gas from our reserves here in Michigan.
They made more money by sending it to CA than selling it here.
The problem with the deep gas is the time required to drill, "frack" and
the get it to the processing plants. A time of probably on the order of
10 years for a meaningful amount of gas. Yet, it's clean, can be
liquefied, can power cars, trains, and power plants with far less
pollution than coal or even fuel oil. It's also cheap compared to
Hydrogen, easy to transport, and contains a lot more energy per unit AND
it does not take land out of food production.
