I have a NG furnace in my shop. I installed everything from the meter 
in, including the IR furnace. It was approved by the building inspector 
and has been running for the last 10 years (give or take)

I never worry about pilot lights because there aren't any.  Both have 
exhaust fans so the actual fire chamber runs at a pressure less than 
atmospheric. The on demand hot water heater has a number of safeties as 
well.

The only gas leak we ever had was the line to the meter. It died of old 
age and separated at the connection.  I think the pressure there is 10" 
of H2O.  The furnace and water heater still worked and the very small 
gas leak was outside. It was not enough to trip the excess flow valve
