I'm not one of Gore's supporters, but computers are my profession, CS is 
my degreed field, and that statement has always bothered me.

Actually the press is completely responsible for that statement.  It was 
a misquote by the press taking "responsible for, or Created", 
substituting  the word "invented", and then running with it.
As he was chief nerd, head of, and cheerleader for the group providing 
the money for the development  he was responsible for...He never claimed 
he invented it. Even several of the big names of the people who did the 
work give him credit for being responsible.   Check Snopes.
