Again, it all depends
I have a complete Hallicrafters station...SX101, HT-32B, and HT-33B
(with the ceramic 8295A)
It's a great station to use and I like the simplicity of the controls.
Like computers and operating systems, all but a small percentage of
those running computers could get along with Win XP, Open Office, or one
of the LINUX flavors. Only gamers and power users can even make use of
all that extra HP. Rigs, old and new are the same way. ALTHOUGH, the
casual user can still get on due to the new technology when the bands
are jam packed. Of course the casual user may not be that interested in
trying to get on when the band is packed.
Me? 4 nights ago I was working world wide on 40 with good signals. 3
nights ago, the band was noisy and long. I spent close to 15 minutes
each working with two state side stations to finally be able to call it
a QSO.
The first station of the night was a G4. Very weak and in the noise, but
we both stuck with it long enough to make a full QSO. When he signed a
station in France called with a pretty decent signal and we held a
fairly long and enjoyable QSO. That was followed by a station in
Slovenia calling me with a very good signal. That was followed by two
stateside stations that were just barely audible, Then came one from
Northern Germany that was the loudest of the evening. We talked for a
while and when he signed I was called by a station out East with a
reasonable signal as the band was getting shorter.
The point is I would never have made at least 3 of those contacts were
it not for the advanced technology and I sure would have liked to have
had the chance to try some of the latest *stuff* under those
conditions. So, although a casual DXer and ragchewer, I find a use for
those new features that let me make contacts I'd never make with the
boat anchor station. Other nights you'd never be able to tell the
difference.. .

I worked Christmas Island on 75 meters with an inverted V only slightly
higher than that and an old tube rig.

Welll... there are times when that is true and times when it isn't.
I've made QSOs using a pair of 6L6s following a 6AG7 oscillator, but I
prefer my old Icom 756 Pro driving an Emtron DX-2sp through a Palstar
AT5K tuner.
I just finished up the base for a new gin pole so I can install the rest
of a 50' 25G that will get a used Force 12 C19XR tribander and hopefully
a WARC-7 also used. I'm finishing a second gin pole that will have a
24' reach so I can install the two 24' long DOM steel tubes into the
tower. That will leave the M^2 40M3-125 (used) at 100 feet with the 7L
C3i 6-meter yagi I've had for about 10 years going up to 115'.

Any one who knows anything about cars should know that...well that and
that probably 80% of the parts in that GM car come from other countries.

There's a place for each mode just as there is for the different levels
of rigs. The contesters and DXers are likely to go for the superior
rigs. They are likely to be the only ones to be able to tell the
difference between them and the less expensive ones. OTOH it's very
easy to tell the difference between the receive functions on the
inexpensive rigs and the higher priced ones. It's up to the individual
to decide whether that difference and features are worth the money or
not. To me they certainly are. Now as to whether I have, or will have
it to spend is something else.
