The Icom 7000 so far has not followed that rule like most rigs have. If
anything I think the 7000 is going for a bit more than they did when
they first came out. OTOH the big rigs will most likely show a slow
price attrition. I think the 7000 will hang on until they have something
to replace it ready to ship. For $1200 including the remote kit it is
one whale of a radio that covers 1.8 through the 440MHz band and all in
between. That said, as I've mentioned before, I don't particularly care
for it or the Yaesu 897D. This would not be a problem for some one who
only operates six meters, or mainly sticks to one band and mode. I do
like all the features, but not going through layers of menus to use them
which is the only way you are going to be able to access all those
features in such a small package. The same is true for *most* of today's
duoband 144/440 rigs and HTs. To really get the most out of the rigs
you need a copy of the manual with you. OTOH it's a good reason for
having all your mobiles the same. IOW club stations, EOC,
organizations, and your personal station.
We (my wife-N8JBW and I) have duoband mobiles in both cars as well as
duobanders in the house and shop. (I think the rig is almost worth more
than my 11 year old car.) If it's only changing frequencies it's no big
deal, but when setting up HTs and mobiles to run *locked* cross band
repeat it can be a royal pain in the back side just between models of
the same make. An example would be Kenwood's TM-V7A and the TM-D700.
Although not completely intuitive the TM-D700 is far easier to set up
and make changes (without the manual) than the TM-V7A and they are very
different when it comes to setting them up for cross band repeat which
is something I do during emergencies and as talk-in for the local swap
every year. For that I can set the little Yaesu HT on the 440 band
running 100 mw while listening on the output of the Midland repeater
which is 147.00. With a head set (or bluetooth for the latest
incarnation) I can walk around the displays inside and out in the trunk
sales and still serve as talk-in station. That is until the PA comes on
so loud I can not hear the receiver through the headset. Guess I need
my aviation ANRs<:-))
