All antennas are compromises and usually a bunch of them. Gain comes at
the expense of signals off the desired axis. IOW a vertical can have
omnidirectional gain in the horizontal pattern by taking power from the
higher angle radiation and putting it out at a lower angle. The more
gain you get the narrower the beam width which is usually measured at
the 3 db points.
The antenna in the linked article sacrifices band width for gain while
maintaining a reasonable f/b ratio.
For absolute maximum gain you sacrifice both bandwidth and even f/b.
On six I only operate in the bottom couple hundred KHz so bandwidth is
not a problem and f/b is of little consequence. If an antenna is
optimized only for maximum gain it's likely to be long with a narrow
band width and a lesser f/b. So I want the biggest, baddest, highest
antenna I can put up. Unfortunately like most of us I'm limited (in
order of importance from major to almost insignificant) by budget, set
back rules, wife, and maybe neighborhood relations. On 40 meters, "to
me" f/b is *almost* as important as gain. I can't work DX off the front
if I'm hearing half the US off the back. Unfortunately even a double
size rural subdivision lot limits me as to size...even if I had the
budget. 4 or 5 elements of 40 is *big!* and expensive. OTOH it's nothing
compared to a 4L on 75. <:-)) Any one remember the 4L for 75 with a
photo of the guy walking along the *inside* of the boom?
