Since I finished up the ground system that grounds the coax at the top
and bottom of the tower as well as where the cables come into the house
through a grounded bulkhead I've had no problems and that is with a
tower that has taken at least 15, visually verified, direct hits. I
rarely ever disconnect any equipment from the AC mains or the antennas.
As to the knots in the power cords, it's adding a bit of inductance.
Preferably I'd take a few turns through a ferrite core, but we must
remember why and how equipment is damaged. It is damaged due to some
part having a large voltage difference between it and other parts. If we
let everything rise to the same voltage, or keep everything down (almost
impossible) there will be no damage. That voltage may come in on the AC
line, it may come in on a control cable, a telephone line, or even a
ground wire. The voltage may even be *induced* into station
interconnecting cables although "in general" I'd say most damage is done
from nearby strikes that induce voltage into the power line.
Using a common point ground and a *good* ground system with all cables
coming into the house bypassed at the entrance is the best insurance.
This improves the chances that all parts of the equipment will rise to
the same potential if it goes up rather than having the AC line or
antenna at a far different voltage.

If you put a over and under through type hook up, it'll burn to the wiring but not the Equipment out(Choke) and all you'll have to do is replace your electrical hook up to your equipment. It can be loose not tight.
