Solid state gear *can* be protected, it would be extremely tough
proximate to
the event, much less difficult at a distance.
The 50's-60's AC/DC powered tube-type mobile gear may be one consideration,
though they may need to be converted to SSB/DSB or FM. (see discussion
below)
They are more portable, certainly mobile - if only by horse-drawn wagon
with
a few deep-cycle batteries! :-)
One wonders what sort of lingering band noise and propagation effects may
occur - especially since the high-impact pulse may be followed by a
bunch of
other lower-level solar activity. (There are a whole other set of
variables were
it a man-made EMP event.)
It would be an interesting exercise to postulate this sort of event and
to then
consider which bands and modes will be preferable.
Those who jump to digital modes as preferred low-signal/high-noise choices
forget that computers in many areas may have been rendered useless. And in
these times CW is increasingly unreliable due to the paucity of those
competent
in that mode. That leaves AM, FM, or SSB/DSB.
