What do we have that's EMP protected?  Our rigs are protected only if 
they are not plugged in AND the CME is not a really big one.  If it's 
one like the Carrington event then most things solid state will be 
toast. OTOH the old tube type, boat anchors should be just fine. Of 
course my SX101 weighs 73 pounds, the HT32B weighs 90 something, and the 
HT-33B weighs 113#

The only real safe equipment would be "tube type". That has an extra, as 
it'll help with the heat if it's cold outside.

And I could go flying without a lot of traffic "up there" as it'd all be 
old, low tech flying VFR. Until the gas ran out.
OTOH if it hit head on with the poles aligned just right the plasma 
would just punch on through and we wouldn't have to worry about 
communications.
