Hey Doc,
Your best bet is SSB for six meters (USB). I have a loop (KU4AB) up
about 20 feet, and with 8 watts from my ten tec transverter, I have
worked AZ and into Canada in the Northeast, from here in EM55 (West
TN) Most guys who are serious use a beam, but even a small one will
really help things. If all you have is a vertical, by all means try
it! When 6 is open, it is OPEN. This is the best time of the year,
for what is called Sporadic E openings, just listen between 50.125 and
50.150. I just tune around and try to work what I hear, you know?
LOTS of fun when the band is open.
6 is also subject to F2 propagation during sunspot cycle peaks, so it
acts like a VHF and an HF band . . .
There is a lot more, don't want to bore you, but I hope you'll get 6m
fever. For the next couple of months, there should be 3 or 4 good
openings every week!
By the way, the 10 meter Radio Shack rig you sold me has been great!
I've worked almost 20 states already with it, using a simple dipole.
73, and good DX,
Trent
