I have owned and used a FT-736 since 1996. Got it
as a replace for a Kenwood TS-780 (2 meter/432 rig)
which was fried by lighting. Sensitivity is a bit low
when compared to some other rigs (My TS-680s and the
FT-857d hear better on 6 meters for example, but it
worked better on 2 meters than an ICOM 706. In 1996
had an opening in the Sept VHF contest to NV,AZ, and
UT from EM-57 worked over 20 stations SSB on 2 meters)
but has worked extremely well. I got the 6,22, and
1296 modules. It is my primary 222 rig in contests,
and had worked like a champ on that band and 432 as
well. I have made only 5 contacts on 1296 but from
this grid 1296 activity is very rare. One reason I
replaced that module with a 6 meter one. Works well
with amps.
Used the rig in VHF contests 1996 through 2000,
when I (and my limited multi op group) lead the
Central Division in our categories (I did a couple of
solo efforts as well). I can't do that sort of effort
anymore, but the rig is still used in contests and at
other times when possible. So, it is a good contest
rig. I also recommend it for satellite work as well.
Never used a TS-60 but even so I would personally
prefer the FT-736.
