I play it by ear, conditions, and mood.
With a good opening I listen for new grids, states, countries, or zones.
If the band is open to an area where I have most/all the grids I let the
other station set the pace. If they wan't to talk, I'll talk. If I call CQ
and get a bunch of answers I try to work them, but if only one comes back I
again set it up so they can talk and if willing I just keep the QSO going.

I've had some good long talks and some days have been like contest
operation. <:-))
If there is a good opening and I feel like talking I'll move up the band a
ways and listen for calls where I'm more likely to find some one who just
wants to talk rather than exchange grids. If they call CQ and sign using
their grid it's a good chance they are looking for grids, but if it's a
straight CQ without the grid they *may* be looking for a rag chew.
