There are still ways to get up on the cheap too... I ran into some
SyntorX's awhile back for a freebie and had the chips re-programed for
6m. Built a copper tube J-pole and ran it up 20ft. I got into Arizona
this morning with that setup on 52.525. Yippie!!! It's been awhile!!!
Also picked up a TenTec transverter used fer $50.00 Along with a FT-301
for another $50 bucks. Got them set up on a copper dipole. The Yaesu
works on CW but thats all.... Have to send it to a Yaesu mechanic to get
worked on since SSB and AM/FM there is no transmit. Should be a nice
station once thats taken care of. I build my own antennas out of
whatever comes up. This is a LOW BUCK operation. I'd LOVE to toss
$349.00 at a new Ranger if I had it all at once but thats notthe way it
goes around here. And there are NO IC706's or FT-857's or other such
rigs in my near future either. Unless of course money falls out of the
sky onto my QTH. In the meantime I'll keep building bigger antennas.
Look for a cheap 6m brick and see about getting the FT-301 healthy. I
don't mind hearing about the high buck stations. It is educational to
see what the other side of the coin is doing.:-) I'm having fun getting
my pieces sorted out one way or another anyway. New improvements in the
works are a 2el quad for the FM rig and a 4 or 5el yagi for
Yaesu/transverter setup. Whatever you can afford have fun with it. That
is part of the challenge huh???
