Thank you for the reply and excellent points.
I add one footnote. In the days information was on paper it was much easier to find receiver, transmitter, and modulator projects for construction from "retired" AM broadcast receivers and military surplus. Moving a "free" AM broadcast receiver to 3500-4000 kHz was an hour's work (instructions in Boy's Life Magazine). But buying the band-spread variable capacitor and BFO transistor (IF transformer for BFO coil assumed free) to make it a ham receiver still pushed the limits of a newsboy's available cash.
