I have used NC-173, NC183, SX42, and SX101 all on 6M. The only one that was useable was the SX101. I believe it had to be equipped with the converter, but had calibration for 6M. The Hammarlund HQ-170VHF came equipped with the converters for 6 and 2 and worked very well. Also the National NC-300 and NC303 were excellent receivers with VHF dial calibration and available with external converter console box for 6,2, and 220MHZ. As a rule, however, most of the old receivers that had 6 Meter coverage had the relative sensitivity of a cardboard box on that band. Having 6 meter coverage was a marketing gimmick in late 40's early 50's timeframe, but didn't work very well. Most people on 6 in the 50s and 60s timeframe (me included) used external converters with those old receivers and that worked very well. You can also add a preamp which sometimes helps a lot. Good Luck. Boatanchors and tubes rule!!
