One thing to keep in mind is that with a wire you'll have lobes in a 
fixed pattern and if the station you want to QSO is in a null, it could 
be tough going. With a beam, you can turn the antenna (hence the 
pattern) to maximize the signal levels.

For a point of reference, I have a 5 element Cushcraft A50-5S (optimized 
for gain and F/B) at 40' and it seems to do a excellent job from my QTH.
