[SixClub] transverters

All,
 
I have been researching VHF transverters, and am amazed at the price of  some 
of them.  Both Downeast and SSB USA have transverters in the $300 and  up 
range . . . what would be the advantage of buying a transverter like that  
instead of buying an all mode HF/6 radio, for example?
