[SixClub] Newly-Licensed Operators-What Leads to Success?

Mike,

I use the 9406 thread as typical of countless I've seen on the net-on many groups. Certainly the members posting about the 9406 know more about it than I do.

Several new hams around here got on the air with refurbished Heathkit or similar tube or discrete equipment. That's a path that gives new hams some operating experience to choose bands and modes they like. Then they move on. The recommendations I usually read on almost any internet group don't correspond to paths I've seen succeed.

Sometimes I hear of new hams making their first DX contact with a 2-transistor CW transmitter built on a wooden board-admittedly not on 6 meters. Maybe what I've seen is atypical.

Does the ARRL, or somebody, have a page based on real-world new ham successes. If not, maybe I'll rejoin and bug them to survey the more successful club recruiters.

Regards,

Steven
