I wish you'd read beyond the first line of my post.

 

I have no objection to equipment costing what it costs.  What I object to is the seemly 95% of older hams who respond to newcomers telling them the likes of, "The stuff you can afford is junk.  You *have* to get at least a XXX999."  Invariably the XXX999 cost 2 to 4 times the cost of the transceiver or antenna the newcomer asked about.  Almost every time I've followed a thread started by a newcomer's query, the cost of a "minimum acceptable" rig increases with every response.

 

What's the point in telling newcomers they can't afford a station?  What I asked for was giving newcomers something like the advice you just gave.

 

If you actually disagree with something I said, please clarify.
