[SixClub] Scammer Alert

This most likely is coming from overseas, possibly Nigeria or the UK. Go
to google and enter 411 scam. You will get tons of hits. The grammer and
the verbiage used in these emails will give you a good idea if they are
legit or not.

The most recent scam is to become friendly with someone in a chat room
and then you are asked to buy something they will claim they can not get
in their country. They will tell you that a Money order or check is
enroute or they will pay you through Western Union.

If the product is $200 they will tell you the money order is for $300
and you can keep the remainder for your troubles.

Meanwhile, you order, pay and ship the product overseas. Then when you
try to cash the paper money, within 10 business days it will come back
as fraud and you will be responsible for covering the check.
The banks very rarely take the hit.

I also tend to play with these folks and try to get them to send me a
"Goodwill advance" so I know they are for real. Those requests always
are unanswered, but its fun to lead them on anyway.

Subject: [SixClub] Scammer Alert

Hi All...

I have recently had a number of radio related items
for sale on QTH.com, Eham and ARRL websites. Several
times a scammer has answered my varying ads and
inquired as to make a purchase. You all probably have
heard from this crook but in the off chance you have
not here are the particulars.

He seems to use the email address of:
g-wll005 at yahoo.com (although there are surely
others...). he signs/calls himself, "Mr.Greg", his
full name (at least for Yahoo) is, Greg Willis. He
seemed legit, until I asked for his Callsign and he
responded with,"my phone be out of order, I can call
you next week"....(So...Callsign= Phone
Number...that's a new one!)

I wrote him back again requesting a Callsign and got
the same reply. " we don need no stinkin' ham
ticket"...What!

In reality, I can understand someone not having
license, but I guess the kickers were the fake
politeness, very poor english and him wanting to pay
with a money order... (send the difference to my
brother in law's, sister's, dad's uncle's, nephew's
mother...hihihi)...you know the drill.

Maybe it is a good idea to VERIFY who you are dealing
with in the first place. I try to make it a general
rule to not deal with non-hams (with a few
exceptions...) I am not meaning to be difficult,
rather I just seem to have far less problems with
those in our "fraternity."

In the meantime...I have just been playing along with
"Mr. Greg", just screwing with his head so to speak.
Anyway this fellow IS a serious con artist, so watch
out for him, he's looking for a mark in the worst
way. Don't sell him anything, if you take that chance
you will regret it!

(Too bad there is not such a thing as a "Known
Scammer Llist" because "Mr. Greg" would surely be at
the head off the list!)

Forewarned IS Forearmed.
