I've used the 706MKIIG for a couple of years on many bands, mostly six.  Works great, but I've gotta say that if you need a base rig and are willing to spend that kinda money, spend a little more and go with the bigger rig.  THe 746pro for example isn't extremely expensive and blows away the 706 even if you're not a "serious operator" or a very "picky" one.  Some other fine rigs I've used in the past couple years are the FT-847 and Currently the TS-2000 and 746Pro.  The 706 will work great, but for the money those bigger rigs are much more fun.
