I owned a 706 for a short time. While it is a nice radio, I found it
not to work well for serious contesting. I used it for one of the
VHF contests and 1/2 way through my eyes were fatigued from looking
at the small display and the small tuning knob made my hand cramp. I
ended up getting an FT-847 which suited my particular needs better
(larger display, bigger tuning knob, separate ports for hf/6/2/.70,
etc). I highly recommend the FT-847 though it does cost a little
more. I got mine a couple years ago when Yaesu had the holiday
coupon for about $1000.
