One last advice, always test your grounding with a
>good digital ohm meter. You should get less than .3
>ohms on a mechanical connection for it to be
>considered as good. More than .5 ohms is crap.

This part is very important for second floor stations and will make the difference between bothering with the ground at all or not. If the ohms are way off it's probably best to not use that ground at all. Especially if it's just a single 100w radio on a power supply with a 3-prong power cable and your antennas are properly installed and individually grounded. In these situations a lousy station ground can do more harm than good. This is the jist I got in layman's terms after asking more experienced hams how to do my station ground when moving my own station to a second floor. They turned out to be right for my purposes. I'm back to the first floor and I have only a few feet to the station ground rod. It's necessary for what I'm running now.
RFI wise, a few coils in the extra coax always helps a lot with my six meter antennas. A good install and a few easy tricks can sometimes get you a lot further than spending a lot of time and money going nuts with getting the ground to the shack.
Got any cold water pipes on that second floor:-)
