What were these fellows basing their statements on? Was it past years
like they do in the stock  market or maybe something they read on a
space oriented website?

when was the last time they could predict the weather or the course of a

hurricane?
what makes you think anyone can predict the what the next solar cycle 
will be?
as far as i know  NO ONE has been able to predict when the cycle ever 
starts or ends let alone what the next one will be
