Dennis,
Talking about antennas is a lot like a political election, Dennis. Everyone
has opinions - and as soon as you get more than a handful of variables to
debate, it becomes personal preference. I don't want to start an email
fight over who's antenna is the best.... :) Instead, let me state why I
FEEL that M2 antennas are better. Its my opinion, and my opinion only.
Make your own judgement.
Our club has replaced every Cushcraft beam we've had (70cm, 2m, and 6m) with
M2. We've had several years now of survivability of the M2 antennas.
Kansas isn't Florida. But we do have some bad winds here in Tornado alley.
1. The wind loading on the Cushcraft is 4.46 sq. ft. The M2 is 2.2 sq ft.
That means a lot less torque on the rotor/tower - which one would expect
with smaller diameter tubing and one fewer element. Highest gain and heavy
antennas don't always equal survivability.
2. Similarly, the Cushcraft is 18 lbs. The M2 is 11 lbs. A lot less wear
and tear during wind.
3. Your point about the elements being larger diameter on the Cushcraft - I
don't believe that I've seen a broken element on a M2 or a Cushcraft. I
have seen them come off Cushcraft antennas, because they aren't run through
the boom or bracketed like M2. I believe boom strength is more important -
and both brands have good booms.
