While operating in Alaska (WL7M), I worked quite a few lower 48 stations on
FM and, believe it or not, AM. It DOES depend on the opening - but when 6
M is REALLY open, FM works just fine. The signals from the lower 48
stations were 20 - 30 dB over S9 during those openings - sounded like they
were sitting next to me. Don't be afraid to give it a try. You may be
surprised.....
