As a fellow listadmin, Jerry, if you're looking for a consensus, forget
it. The problem is, there are
equally compelling arguments for either method. I tend to be one of the
people who believe that
a mailing list is for sharing information, and believe that replies
should go to the list. Except for
haggling between buyers and sellers of equipment, which should be done
off the list, most of the
replies are intended for the list, anyway.
You can take a vote, but I can share my results on another list with
you. On this list of approximately
800 hams, I got fewer than 25 replies to my poll, and they were roughly
evenly divided. There were a
few more vocal types who thought that they could sway things, but I
ignored them. I would have been
willing to switch the replies to go to the individual if there really
were a consensus, and if more members
had expressed an opinion. At this point, "reply to list" has been the
norm for such a long time that
changing it would be disastrous.
My advice: don't be misled by a few vocal types who think they know the
answers (not aimed at anyone
involved in this discussion, BTW!). My vote is for replies to the list.
