ref all the previous post concerning coax and which to use
something that happened to me using 2 meters but definitely
applies to all vhf'/uhf antennas, I had a 2 meter beam that I
had put up, with company supplied coax, it was fixed in direction
to hit a local net/repeater, I had been using it for a couple years
when i started getting stepped on during checkin's didnt give it
to much thought yet, till couldnt get in at all using the beam transmitter
output was 15 watts, antenna was at 20 feet, low but works for me
and not noticed by the neighbors. Found out i could check in with
the mobile and a quarter wave setting in the drive way but the beam
wouldnt make it, Had to retune the antenna still had problems
found out the feed to beam was lossy, 50 watts in only 22 watts
at the antenna, sold the beam and went to my old 2 meter ground
plane, with old feed line excess of 30 years old, worked better then
the newer coax and beam, big question is why 50 watts to a quarter wave on the
vehicle out performed 22 watts into 8dbd beam
havent heard an answer to that one yet, best bet is
to check the coax for loss 50 watts in now has approx 42 watts at the
antenna.
