This is good to know that the hardware is all working and the cables
from the soundboard to radio are all right. Make sure your rx level is
about 0dB with nothing but receiver noise i.e. no signals. The green
line will hit the tics on either end and the dB can be read in the 3rd
pane from the left on the bottom status bar. (Receive Noise I think it
is labeled)When you click the "Monitor" button and wait about 3 seconds
hit "Stop" and observe the Receive Noise. Make adjustments to the
windows sliders as necessary.

Modes: This has been a moving target as Joe has several out for testing.
I would recommend using FSK441C for Six Meters propagation mode meteor
scatter and JT65A or B for weak signal tropo. After you have made
contacts using those modes then experiment with others if you like.

The latest mode of WSJT is Version 4.6.1 . I highly recommend
downloading it and there is another manual available that I think is
slightly better. Make sure your running a program to keep the clock
updated on your computer. I have mine adjusted to reset every 10
minutes. There is a Program Freeware called Dimension 4 that works
perfect for this. By the way, when you download the new program keep
the older version because it doesnot have JT44.

For Saturday morning on six meters. Monitor 50.260MHz from 15:00 to
16:00UTC. Point your antenna towards the Ky. area. You should be
over-ran with meteor pings. Are point towards my qth, at our distance we
are able to work any day of the year provided we run for 20 minutes or
so and you have at least 100 watts into a good yagi antenna.

Part two: Other times of the week; monitor the Ping Jockey Page
activity. If you're only listening locate skeds that are occurring
within 1200 miles of your qth and monitor them. You will have to get the
frequency of the sked from the PJ Posts. Skeds are made almost daily
with morning being better and more activity on weekends.

For the "Weak Signal Mode like JT65A; remember just because your
monitoring a frequency and not hearing with the ears any signal doesn't
mean WSJT will not decode. So skeds are almost always required for JT65
unless you're working someone you can hear, in which case I guess you
could pick up the mic and talk to them. Hi

them.

I would be happy to sked with you. The Ping Jockey Page is dedicated to
WSJT modes. If you are unable to be "on-line" at the same time as the
sked then you can make skeds via email.

DF = of course Difference in Frequency i.e. if I read you at -100Hz you
probably see me at +100Hz. The correct procedure is start the sked with
the tol set to 400Hz. After you receive a ping that provides some
decode, maybe just on call or whatever... Note the DF. Next, move your
RIT that amount and reduce the TOL to say 100Hz. That will cause
improved copy and better satisfaction. Hi
Remember to move the RIT because the other guy might have already copied
you and made the same adjustment.

Now if I am calling CQ of 50.260 and you copy me DF -120Hz. Just set
your dial on 50.259880 and give me a call but during real time sked USE
THE RIT!

A couple of web sites come to mind you might look at:

Hey, I have made several RTTY qso's on 50.290. Greatest keyboard qso
mode of all time without a doubt.

Greg I hope this helps some. I believe the biggest problem you were
having is not knowing when and where to listen. However make sure you
understand the Standard Operating Procedures. Take a look at them by
pushing the F5 key while WSJT is running. Meteor Scatter contacts must
meet strict requirements in order to be considered valid. All the
information about the qso should leave the house via the coax and not
the internet.
Over the course of WSJT I have documented many things. I have 897 total
meteor scatter qso's on six meters and the average completion time is 5
minutes. This is when the band is dead and there is plenty of room for
more operators. HiHi My completion rate is 80% with stations less than
1200 miles. My little mirage amplifier has been keyed 87 hours 23
minutes and that does not include the 220 failed contacts I have. Enough
of my stupid numbers, hope to have a sked soon with you.
