Well, I know why the 3-terminal mod didn't work.  *#$@#$ -15V regulator
was shorted.  Cheap Amazon parts.  Testing other -15V regulators in the 
set, there
were two more shorted ones.  One regulator that worked.  I'll install it 
for now, but
am going to order a set of good ones from Mouser.

   The trouble is - if you want something TOMORROW, Amazon is pretty much 
it.  No
local electronics shops anymore.

   I made my modified schematic.  Just printed out the one out of the 
manual, and
inked in the changes.
