There is a book, entitled "Nevada Place Names - A Geographical Dictionary"
that is, at once, intriguing reading, a historical glossary and a quick
history of Nevada. The introduction - some 30 pages - is one of the
shortest and best accounts of Nevada available anywhere.
But the primary purpose of the book is to define "place names", a 14 year
effort by the author.
I looked up "Tahoe" and confirmed Fremont was the first white eyes to view
the lake in 1844. He named it Lake Bonpland (a French naturalist). In
1851, Californians renamed it Lake Bigler, in honor of the then Governor.
That name survived through the mid 1850s. By 1860 the name Tahoe started to
stick and in 1862 the U.S. Land Office made it official. Indians referred
to it as "Tah-hoe-ee" meaning big lake. Fremont - sure, everybody knows
that story. But the rest is little known.
>From Abbotts Fork to Zephyr Cove, there are hundreds and hundreds of place
names. Intriguing reading and browsing.
This book will be presented to one of our general meeting attendees on
August 7th. The selection process will be very fair.
Great meeting - SKYWARN. Good company, lots of coffee and cookies and the
chance to own a wonderful book.
