Special Weather Statement
300 PM PST sun Dec 26 2004
...Intense and slow moving winter storm to affect region starting
Wednesday night...
The first of two storm systems to affect the region through the new
years weekend will move south along the California coast through
Tuesday...before moving east ahead of another storm system dropping
out of the Gulf of Alaska on Wednesday. The first storm is expected
to affect mainly the Sierra...where up to a foot of snow could fall
through Tuesday night over Mono County. However...light snowfall
accumulations are possible in western Nevada and the northern Sierra
Monday through Tuesday night.
The main storm of interest will begin to affect the region Wednesday
night. The cold upper low is projected to remain off the Pacific
northwest coast through the new years weekend...with several
disturbances rotating around the low. This is expected to setup an
extended period of winter weather for the region through the new
years weekend. Snow and gusty winds in the Sierra Wednesday night are
expected to spill over into western Nevada valleys Thursday. It is
becoming increasing likely that the High Sierra will receive at least
3 feet of snowfall through next weekend. For the valleys of western
Nevada...over a foot of snow is possible.
This is shaping up to be a significant winter event. Persons
planning travel in the Sierra or western Nevada should monitor
the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service at
weather.Gov/Reno or from your favorite local media source.
