PRESS RELEASE
SHARC to Run Special Ham Radio Station at Brooksville Raid
The ham radio operators of the Spring Hill Amateur Radio Club (SHARC) will
operate a “Special Event Station” during the Brooksville Raid on Saturday,
January 19th, 2008. The temporary amateur radio station will be set up at
the Sand Hill Scout Reservation on Cortez Blvd., State Route 50 from 8:00 AM
until 5:00 PM.
This special station tells other hams and short wave listeners about this
historic event with the hope of increasing future Raid participation. SHARC
will mail a commemorative confirmation of the special contact (QSL) to hams
who make contact. Last year, SHARC had direct two-way radio contact with
over 400 hams all across the USA and in several foreign countries. This
special event station will use a special call sign issued by the Federal
Communications Commission - W4B - and has been authorized by the American
Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national association for ham radio.
Almost 3,200 Civil War re-enactors and 14,000 visitors attend the two-day
event each year, making this the largest Civil War battle recreation in
Florida and one of the largest in the Country.
SHARC is a local group of 75 members who are tested and licensed by the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to operate short wave two-way radios
on the ham radio bands. The club meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at
Oak Hill Hospital. For more information visit their website at
www.kf4ixu.org or call Mike KF4IFF at 352-683-2753.
