Guys - Let me give you some background on the SFDXA and support for
DXpeditions. Norm, W4QN, has been in the SFDXA longer than I have, but I am
the second longest full member, continuously from 1979. This is not
something new as we had many requests for funding even before "the Internet
was inverted by Al Gore." Although our general answer was that we would
fund after the operation (in other words, if we were in the log), we treated
each request on an individual basis. If my memory serves me well, we funded
many Dxpeditions prior to the event but only if they were from established
organizations or from well-know DXers. Back in the "old days," we would
also fund one of them to come speak at the annual dinner a the Miami Hamfest
(remember that)? Also, a DX club good get "exposure" by sending funds after
the DXpedition and still be acknowledged on the QSL . Now most DXpeditions
have a website and list the sponsors before, during, and after the
DXpedition. I feeling is that each request be handled on an individual
basis, taking into account the reputation and past DXpedition history of the
participates. If you are looking for club exposure, you get no mileage for
contributing after the fact. Ultimately, the decision to provides funds
prior to a DXpedition, after, or even at all, rests with the membership. I,
as well as several other SFDXA members, contribute to DXpeditions,
regardless of whether the club does so or not. I do so to promote ham radio
and help where I can. I encourage all members to contribute regardless
whether or not the club does. The amount isn't as important as the concept
of helping provide support.
My 2 cents worth,
Mike, W4UM
