I had to mail a couple of different sized items in the mail today, and
questioned the postal clerk about rates. They seem to keep changing, so I
asked for a rate chart. She didn't have one, but told me the following:
First class Mail in the USA:
..................Letters-------Flats------- Parcels
First Ounce ------$.44 -------- $.88 ------- $1.22
Additional Ounce <----- $.17 for all-------->
You know what a letter size # 6 or # 10 Envelope
a Flat is a bit flat envelope 8x10, 9x12 etc.
A parcel is more than 1/2 inch thick and will not go through the automated
machines.
4x6 or 5x7 envelopes can be first class unless they are too thick.
6x9 envelopes are flats unless too thick.
So... if you mail a pile of QSLs and the package is small but thick you have
to start at the $1.22 rate.
First Class can go to 4 ounces.
Flats and parcels can to to 13 ounces,
Over that, the flat rate parcel post rates are more economical.
Hope this helps you figure out what has puzzled me for a long time LOL
