Chuck

I want to mention a couple items:

1. The new Motorola Quantar repeater for VHF is now on the bench for some
testing:

--Power out is 120 watts in both digital and analog modes
--The repeater supports both analog and conventional operation
transparently. This means that digital APCO 25 radios (our current products
like XTS1500 XTS2500 XTS5000 and mobiles like XTL5000 XTL 2500 and XTL1500)
can use the repeater in analog as well as digital modes. Here is the point:
if you are using an analog radio(like most amateurs) and there is a digital
user on the repeater, all you will hear is digital "buzz".
Our analog W4MOT repeater has been transmitting PL 100 Hz for many
years, and the new repeater will continue to transmit PL=100Hz in the analog
mode. To avoid the digital "buzz" , all analog radios should be programmed
to have the portable or mobile PL=100 Hz on receive. In that case, the
receiving portable with PL=100 Hz receive will not open squelch to hear the
digital "buzz" coming out of the 146.79 repeater. But only one conversation
is allowed at one time, so the users need to listen to the repeater carrier
squelch first or there will be "RF collisions".

We need to talk this up on the repeater so the word gets around.

Rich
