Flood Watch In effect until Sunday morning,
The NWS in miami has issued a
Flood watch for south Florida
Until Sunday morning
Hurricane dennis is forecast to move across central cuba today and into the
southeast gulf of mexico by Saturday morning. With this forecast track,
Mainland South Florida will be on the right side of the hurricane which is a
favored area for heavy rains and potential flooding.
After a very wet June across south Florida, Including A New record monthly
rainfall total in excess of 20 inches at naples, The Ground Is saturated and
canals are full. Storm total rainfall of 3 to 5 inches is expected across
south Florida with local amounts as high as 8 inches especially over the southern
part of the peninsula through Sunday morning. Local amounts as high as 8
inches are also possible where spiral bands cause training of thunderstorms
across the same location for several hours.
These heavy rains coupled with already saturated conditions will be enough
to cause localized flooding across parts of mainland south Florida. Persons
with potential flood problems from heavy rains should check preparedness
requirements and take action to protect property today. Squalls associated with the
outer bands of hurricane dennis will begin to affect parts of south Florida
as early as this afternoon.
A flood watch means conditions are favorable for heavy rains and possible
flooding. Persons in the watch area should remain weather alert and be ready
for quick action should flooding begin or a warning be issued. Additional
updates will be issued later today.
Stay tuned to noaa weather radio or commercial radio or television for later
statements and possible warnings.
