Bill, interesting.
I like AM. There was a period in the mid 70s that that was my mode of
choice for phone operations. I had great fun using a DX 100, and a large
wire loop. I wasn't the strongest signal but it was great fun and all the
ops were real gentlemen.
But then I studied for my Advance license and started wondering about
bandwidth and proper band etiquette. I had been active on 160M, I switched
to 10 meters where there was plenty of room and a strong group of AM
enthusiasts.
Most places I find the AMers operating it is a pleasure to listen to them.
But when I hear them on 20 meters, it is different. On 20 meters - there
never seems to be enough room for the AM signals - or rarely enough room.
On 20 meters the AM operations seem to foster the worst kind of operating
practices - from AM SSB wars to simply occupying a frequency because it is
the published AM frequency.
All of it bad form - and not good for anyone.
I hope the League avoids that kind of operation.
