  Im a scanner hobbyist  who got my  start in 2000  with GMRS /  licensed.     conventional technologies like trunking and   nextel    have   done some  fine replacement.
   
  Never getting into ham,  I  wonder  what    Packet  Radio  still is  in hams ? Can somebody  help    refer me  to a  text or  help me understand how radios  or comps  are  receving  packets  exactly  ?    i'm  a little confused.   it's like a text fac  to the  radio    correct ?
   
  clarify if you may.   
   
  And if anybody knows  about some  "worthy" chicago repeater systems still in existance in   the  west or   northwest  chicago suburbs,  please   throw some my way - for recreational purposes and  Family  only . !
