No, I read it on the Internet. Someone else was having the same problems
programing their BC796D. The answer was that the 796D was not capable of
working in digital mode in Indiana (or Mich and Ill.), although digital, it was a
different type of system. I programmed Safe-T net into it, but, could never
pick anything up so I assumed that they were correct, it doesn't work here.
So, I packed it up in the box that it came in and put it in my closet where
it's been for the last three months. I've got the Pro 96 and the desktop
version of the 96 too and they both work fine here; and work in Mich. and Ill.
as well. I don't know, I'd like to put it on Ebay now and get rid of the darn
thing. It's brand new, like I said, but I've never been able to get it work
in Indiana. Apparently the 796D works well in other places that have the
older digital systems like Calif. and other states. From what I've read is
that Ind., Ill. and Mich. have a newer version of the Motorola APCO radio
systems that the 796D is not compatible with. That maybe why it's been
discontinued in favor of the newer BC 996T that comes out in June, that radio is
compatible with the newer versions and even has the 3 above mentioned state
preprogrammed into them. There are other states as well that are going for the newer
digital radio systems, so, the market is there for the new BC 996T. I guess
that I jumped the gun and should have waited a few more months before I
wasted my money. Maybe somebody out in Calif. will buy it from me... hahahaha

I use a PRO 96 and a Uniden BC 296D which, I am pretty sure, is the portable
equivalent of the 796D. They both work fine. Out of curiosity, did a Radio
Shack salesbot tell you that only the PRO 96 would work?
