cmon now, let's not confuse him :)...I HIGHLY suggest you visit the
www.radioreference.com user forums and do some re/searching. Typically, you
need to be prepared to spend in the range of $500 (used are around 300-450)
for a good digital scanner. Stay away from the Uniden 250/785 as they will
not work on SAFE-T once rebanding is complete in Indiana. Basicly, these are
the models you have to choose from:
Uniden:
BCD296T - Handheld
BCD796T - Base/Mobile
BCD396T - Handheld (most recent release)
BCD996T - Base/Mobile (will be out this summer)
Radio Shack:
Pro-96 - Handheld
Pro-2096 - Base/Mobile
If you decide to go with Uniden, stay away from the 296/796 as you are
probally not going to find them much cheaper than the current model. Go with
the BCD396T which retails new for around $530 and used for around $450
If you decide to go with RS, You can pick up a Pro-96 new for $499.99 or
used for around $350. However, I have purchased two of them from RR.com's
classified forum at $300 each. Just got to look around for the best
price/condition if you go used. This even includes fleabay.
Most people are going to prefer the RS Pro-96. However, Uniden has just
released some major updates to the 396 that now make the audio comparable to
the Pro-96. I own both and still prefer the Pro-96, although, this is just
personal prefernce since the updates. They are comparable in performance in
my opinion.
It is going to take some research for you to find the right one for your
paticular needs. If you do not want to do a whole bunch of research and want
a good quality, no fail, digital scanner, get the RS Pro-96/2096 which I
believe are on sale right now for $449.99 (might be over now, not sure) I
wouldn't let RS program your scanner either, no telling what you will end up
with. If you get one, give us a shout and we will help you get it programmed
for your area.
Hope this helps :).
