The system is going to be "upgraded" not rebuilt. It will remain a Motorola
system. Most probally a 3600 Baud system so they can retain the mixed mode
needed for MECA 2. I doubt public utilities will be in digtial. Who
knows.....

The radios that are not already digital ready (which MECA already has some)
will simply be upgraded to digital.

There is no way they go with another system. They are simply looking for
vendors to install the new equipment. Mostly the ASTRO 25 software, dispatch
consoles, tower upgrades etc.... The news report said the equipment would be
delivered by early 2005, and it shouldn't take much to upgrade the system to
a digital platform.

I think it's safe to say you can buy one of the current digital scanners in
anticipation of the new system. Should give everyone plenty of time to save
up! Mabye the pro-96's will have come down in price a little!
