An outside antenna would be a real plus for you.
Your listing pleasure would go up and so would
the number of stations you would hear.
Here are some of the antennas I have for
scanning.
1. A vertical ground plane in the attic, 20 feet
above ground, and one on the roof about 40 feet
off the ground. I unplug the roof antenna when I
leave so mother nature can't zap me.
I also have a mag mount that when not going on
trips with me sits on a piece of sheet metal
hidden the den so when I am in my "potato couch"
position I have a decent antenna for the scanner
I have in there.
Make your own antenna. I am partial to vertical
ground planes because they are simple to build
using an inverted PL259 connector and using
coat-hangers, #14 gauge house wire, welding wire,
or just about any metal material that can fit in
the center of the PL259. You can use tiny
fittings to solder to the wire that can be
attached with tiny machine screws, washers, and
nuts. Do not get sold a bill of goods for
scanning antnnas from sales on the net or scanner
books. I have been scanning since 1980 and
believe me the home made ones work as good or
better than store bought ones. Of course you
should but a store bought one for you car.
There are plenty of projects for antennas on the
net or at Radio Shack, or at the ARRL office
(also on the net).
Have fun and emjoy the hobbie.
